What is the festival about

Bunka Sai (文化祭) is a Japanese term meaning “culture festival”. Bunka Sai offers a fascinating cultural bridge that brings authentic Japanese experiences to the heart of Rio’s mountain region.

The festival isn’t just another cultural event; it’s a full sensory journey!

As soon as you step onto the Crystal Palace grounds, it will feel like you’ve arrived in Japan. Every detail celebrates both its ancient traditions and its modern pop culture.

The Bunka-Sai Festival runs from August 14-17 at the Crystal Palace in Petrópolis, with free admission. Opening Night: A Ceremonial Beginning

The festival kicks off tonight (Thursday, August 14) at 6:45 PM with something truly special. It features a performance of Japanese songs by the Sol, Som e Movimento Project Choir from Instituto Caminho da Roça. It is conducted by Maestro Rafael.

The real highlight kicks off at 7 PM with the official opening ceremony, featuring Kagami Biraki, a traditional sake-drinking ritual. You’ll get to hear both the Brazilian and Japanese anthems and enjoy lively folkloric dances. Which will make you feel like you’re right in the middle of a cultural exchange that bridges two worlds.

If you missed the opening ceremony with its traditional sake ritual and Japanese folk dances, don’t worry because the best is yet to come! This weekend promises to be packed with incredible activities celebrating Japanese culture.

If you’re already a fan of Japanese cuisine or have never tried more than sushi, this is your chance to explore new flavors. You can experience them in the most authentic way possible.
